PLAIN CITY, UT — Some teachers never truly leave the classroom, and for the students at Plain City Elementary, that enduring dedication sounds like a room full of second graders singing in unison.

Kathy Vernieuw, a beloved educator who spent the majority of her career teaching second grade at the original Plain City Elementary site, retired years ago. Yet, her presence is as vibrant as ever in the halls of the school's current building. For over two decades following her official retirement, Mrs. Vernieuw has returned every single Wednesday morning to share her passion for music with a new generation of second-grade Panthers.

Her weekly visits have become a cherished tradition within the Weber School District community, bridging the school's rich history with its bright future.

"Music brings people together, and watching Mrs. Vernieuw share that joy with our students week after week is incredible," said school staff. "She taught many of our current students' parents, and now she's creating those same wonderful memories for their children. Her commitment to our Panther family goes far beyond a typical career."

Every Wednesday, students gather to practice songs, learn rhythms, and build confidence through performance. For the students, singing with Mrs. Vernieuw is a highlight of their week. For the staff, her ongoing service serves as a powerful reminder of the lifelong impact a dedicated teacher can make.
